4 Accessories We Can't Live Without

After the big chunk of design is complete, accessorizing and styling the space is the cherry on top. But what to use? How to style it? Those are intricate details we work into the end of your project, but to keep it simple, here are our top 4 accessories we absolutely cannot live without.

1. Books

Aside from filling bookshelves, books are a fantastic way to style tabletops. Use books to create visual segments on a large coffee table or add levels to a sideboard or nightstand. When creating multiple stacks, vary the amount of books to create different heights and top off a few with a decorative object or candle.

Even if just for the purpose of interior design, I like to find books on topics the homeowner connects with. It can also be fun to swap out seasonal books to keep the room fresh. Think garden or coastal books in spring/summer, and more muted/earthy books in the cooler months.

2. Candles

If you're like me, you know a room isn't clean until a candle is lit. Its a symbolic sigh of completion and silent permission to relax and enjoy home. Find candles that suit the space aesthetically with scents you can't get enough of. Play around with taper candles and pillar candles on a dining table or mantle. Top your stack of books with a jar candle and elegant snuffer. If children are a concern, battery operated candles will do just fine.

3. Blankets

I don't care if its 90 degrees outside, incorporate a dang blanket. The sun will eventually set, and nothing screams home like having a cozy throw nearby to snuggle underneath.

Store blankets in large baskets or drape over chairs or benches. For bedrooms, a blanket at the foot of the bed adds layers and color, and serves as extra warmth on a cold night.

4. Plants

A room is not complete without nature. Our designs incorporate various elements of nature, and greenery is one of them. A tall tree can fill a corner and add visual height to the space. Long stems and branches make a statement in a large vase. Gorgeous florals add color and femininity. Real plants are preferred, but real touch florals are ideal for rooms with limited natural light (and families that can't keep a cactus alive #nojudgement ).

The list goes on, but these four accessories make an appearance in just about every Loudoun County, Virginia home we design.
