Designing a stunning nursery is something I love doing for my clients. With fun wallpaper, paint colors, and decor, nurseries have a gentle wow factor that can bring a smile to your face during those middle of the night wake ups. However, design is as much about the family as it is aesthetics. This family was expecting their third baby and, we decided to keep the nursery simple for now and do a fun "big boy room" when he gets a bit older.
Nursery Furniture: Round 3
This is baby number three, and their nursery furniture (crib, chest, dresser and glider) is holding strong through it's third round. With furniture accounted for, we only needed a few small selections since the goal was to keep the bones of the room easy to update in the future.
The Foundation: Colors and Themes
The oldest son's room is rustic/modern with ebony brown furniture, industrial pipe curtain rods, and navy accents. The middle son's room has softer colors of baby blue with light gray furniture and a whimsical construction theme. For baby boy #3, we wanted to play with something different.
We opted for a subtle woodland theme with sage green, browns and tans, and light wood tones to contrast the dark hand-me-down furniture. A lot of deer and foxes are seen where they live so it was also fitting to include those.
The walls were painted Benjamin Moore White Dove which provides a creamy backdrop while allowing easy customization as the child's interests and preferences evolve. I toiled with the idea of doing a forest mural on the crib wall, and honestly had to hold myself back because I knew that also meant moldings and a cool ceiling design, and we needed to keep it simple and easy to update. Humph.
Simple Touches: Decor and Accents
The true essence of a nursery lies in the personal touches and decorative accents that infuse it with personality. We kept the rods that were there and found sage green curtains with fun ties . We added a large lamp on the dresser for ambient diaper change lighting, and came across this beaded wood mirror while at High Point Market in the Spring.
It was only fitting to include a wood baby gym on top of a woodland play mat, and display wooden toys (since newborns can't play with them yet anyway). A stained wood name in cursive font follows the carefree woodsy vibe.
The crib bedding consists of woodland animals with a soft brown/tan blanket draped over the side. I love how the blanket fits the space but isn't necessarily "woodland," leaving the opportunity to use it in the future room design as well. For laundry and storage, light woven baskets fill the room.
The Journey Continues
As this child grows and transitions from a crib to a toddler bed, then from a toddler bed to a big boy bed, the nursery will evolve accordingly. The neutral foundation we laid will serve as a canvas for a fresh design when they're older.
Designing a timeless nursery can be the beginning of a beautiful chapter in your story as a parent. As your local Northern Virginia Interior Designer and mom of 3, it's my absolute joy to create enduring spaces for your family to enjoy for years to come.
