Some homes are equipped with lavish high ceilings (which can pose their own problems, so don't think its ALL fun and games!) while others have low ceilings and small windows to go with it.
If you're struggling with making these low ceilings appear higher and lofty, read along!
1. Hang window treatments as high as possible
Regardless of the actual size of your window, hang window treatments at least 5 inches above the top of the window, and as high as possible on the ceiling. Its all about perceived height. The eye goes to the top of the curtains, not the windows, instantly making the wall appear taller and elongated.
2. Incorporate Vertical Patterns
A board and batten wall, wallpaper with vertical pattern, or other vertical trim accentuates the height of the ceiling. This can encompass the entire room or serve as an accent wall. Another great example of this is a floor to ceiling fireplace.
3. Utilize empty space
Picture this; a small room, with a small door, and even smaller windows. There is a sofa, armchair, and coffee table. Two books and a candle are placed on the table and a horizontal piece of art is hung just above the sofa. Your gaze is low (and honestly I'm feeling a little claustrophobic just imagining this).
Now take that same imaginary room and install some long striped curtains next to the window, mounted just below the ceiling. Replace the horizontal art over the sofa with 2-3 vertical pieces side by side. And, if budget allows, swap for a taller door.
BOOM. Instant shift.
By strategically filling empty wall space overhead, it is no longer "dead space" and now a part of the entire mood of the room. It feels intentional, roomy, and creates a wow factor even in the smallest spaces.
