Updating your home is no easy task. It's costly, time consuming, and frankly, exhausting. You have one thousand other things to do! Not to worry, that is why I'm here as your trusted advisor, to take you from start to finish and save on all the headaches in between.
Today I'm talking about when to splurge and when to save, but I will start by saying that investing in an interior designer is the first and most important "splurge" of all. I cannot stress enough how this can save thousands of dollars in costly mistakes that could have easily been avoided if a seasoned expert was by your side through the process.
Aside from creating the design itself, we designers have years of "street smarts" under our belts. A client may want white grout in their mudroom or marble kitchen countertops - both perfectly stunning design choices, but are they practical for that client's lifestyle? We want you to love the design now AND enjoy it for years to come.
Okay, back to the list of saving and splurging.
Bedding Linens : Splurge
I'm not a doctor, but I know you should be in your bed roughly 8 hours a day. Now, that is a long time to be lounging in an uncomfortable cocoon. Investing in high quality bedding allows you to drift off into a heavenly dreamland each night.
Bedding linens are extremely personal; whether you are a hot or cold sleeper, have any skin sensitivities, or simply prefer a certain texture. To solve this, I provide clients with samples of their bedding before they commit. I recommend only the best, so when they first touch the sample, its usually a quick yes!
Trendy Looks : Save
You cannot design your home from a conglomeration of Pinterest boards. Use it for inspiration - absolutely - and I prefer when my clients do this because it allows me to get a feel for what they are drawn to.
What I am talking about is that "trending look" you will see popping up over and over again online. You've seen it so many times that its growing on you, and now you want to do it too.
The problem is, its not you. It's copy and paste without taking into consideration the rest of your home, your style, and your family. Oftentimes, you will tire of it within a couple of years or less and want to redo it. The trend passed and it isn't serving you anymore. Save your money on this one and create a cohesive design.
Custom/Semi Custom Furniture : Splurge
In a world of quick and cheap, custom furniture reigns supreme in my book. While this is more of an investment up front, it will serve your family well for much longer than any mass market retailer.
Custom and Semi Custom furniture provide freedom to include high quality pieces tailored to your lifestyle and preferences. Sofas and chairs can have different cushion fills, and performance or outdoor fabrics can be selected. There is no longer a limitation on the size of your room with what is standard furniture sizing. You can truly make it your own.
Pricey Hand Knotted Rugs : Save
Before I have the internet design trolls coming at me with pitchforks, let me explain. My clients typically have children, pets, or both (as do I). For households like these, I recommend using a nice affordable rug that can be updated over time. You don't want to be afraid to live because you purchased a rug that didn't serve your lifestyle. If the kids crush some Cheerios or the dog has an accident, its a quick cleanup and no tears shed.
Save your money in areas you can so you can splurge in areas you should!
